Hands-on therapy has long been a part of Equine Therapy, and modern treatments for the horse benefit from the use of empathetic touch therapies that offer something both holistic and effective. Many clients have found that Shiatsu has something extra to offer in the treatment of themselves and their horse, due to its gentle techniques and unique oriental heritage.

Shiatsu originates in Japan, and in many ways is hard to describe, as it has a complexity and subtlety to both its Traditional Chinese Medical theory, and its hands-on clinical practice. Some have described it as Japanese physiotherapy, acupuncture without needles, or an acupressure massage system , but it is uniquely suited to equine work, as it works gently, yet deeply, and the horses often are deeply relaxed both during, and after a treatment.

A practitioner will use a carefully chosen combination of weight and movement to encourage stretching and joint mobilisation, and offer appropriate pressure on the acupuncture points of the body so they can work not only on the horse but with the horse. A Shiatsu treatment can have profound results, both long and short term, as it aims to help release tight muscles and stiff joints,and help reduce stress and bring balance to the body's energy.

Shiatsu can be used along side other forms of treatment without fear of conflict and is useful not only in the form of palliative care , but as a regular maintenance treatment to enhance your horses well-being.
