Narrowboat Farm Company Information
General information
In late 2015, 4 acres of the existing Park Farm were purchased to form a new agricultural business, 'Narrowboat Farm', a market garden with a difference:
200 years ago the Union Canal was built and farms quickly seized on the opportunity to transport their goods by boat. Shortly after, trains and roads came along and the canals fell into disuse. As the name suggests, our intention is to bring this piece of history alive by once again linking local produce with boats. Narrowboat Farm will be run by members of the boating community and will produce healthy, tasty food for local markets.
In April 2017 we were awarded a 'young farmer start-up grant' which will be used to get the project up and running properly. This facebook page has been established as a 'holding page' until such a time that the project launches. So, 'coming soon'...
As well as being a 'microfarm', NBF is also a pilot site for www.communitymoorings.com which is a brand new social enterprise seeking to create amazing places on the canals.
The aim is to make the canals busier and more interesting and better... in a word 'vibrant'. We'll do this by offering innovative places to visit by boat and moor boats. Specifically, we want moorings which promote new canal users and boat trips. After all, that is what the canals are for and unless we have more boats moving more often we run the risk of the canals silting and weeding up and eventually closing once more.
NBF is just one example of a way we can innovate moorings and create unique experiences along the canals...
