Devon Sparks

General information

Thanks for visiting my Facebook page. My name is Matt Staten and I’m an electrician based in Exeter. I generally work all over Devon but usually cover the area between Tiverton to Torquay, Okehampton to Honiton and Crediton to Exmouth.

My long term goal is to run a successful business providing high standard electrical installations and maintenance services. I founded Devon Sparks in 2015 whilst I was still working full time for a local Renewable Energy firm, for whom I installed the electrical aspects of Solar PV. With the government promising to slash the feed-in tariff, the trade was looking like it may collapse and there was a sense of panic around the whole sector. Although the firm I worked for was confident that they could see it through and that trade would pick up again, I could see myself becoming made redundant as there was to be a huge drop in sales at the time of the reduction in the feed in tariff.

After starting up Devon Sparks, I work for myself on Saturdays to gradually build up the business. In January 2016, I was made redundant. So here goes, my opportunity to really make a go of this and become self employed. After landing a few big jobs and also a lot of little jobs, I have not looked back. Perhaps this is something I should have done a long time ago.

So, what have I been doing since trading as Devon Sparks?

Well, there have been a few rewires. One of which was for a six-bed mansion in Exeter. This was a huge redevelopment which, over all, has kept the builders busy for over 2 years. One rewire, located in Brixham, was originally a Laundry and converted to a two-bed flat. Another rewire was a one-bed semi-detached house in Sandford, which was also as part of a property redevelopment. I have also worked on a new build, a five-bed mansion located near Rackenford.

Whilst working on these big jobs, I have also had plenty of work from home owners in their own homes. These include new consumer units, additional sockets, new circuits, general electrical modifications, maintenance, fault finding and rectifications.

I should also mention that I have worked on behalf of Plumbers, Bathroom Installers and Kitchen Installers providing the electrical installations for all of these.

There was also the work I did on behalf of an estate agent in Exeter. Firstly, I worked as part of their office renovation, for which I supplied additional sockets in dado trunking, data cabling, new lighting and a new consumer unit. From this, I went on to doing the electrical maintenance work for rented properties and also the ‘Electrical Installation Conditions Reports’, also known as ‘Landlord Safety Checks’.

So, all in all, it’s been a busy first year for Devon Sparks. Now, I’m hoping that this will continue as I’m always looking forward to what work is waiting for me around the corner. I’m hoping that my next job will be with you so please get in touch.
