The Trussell Trust Food Bank

Today in Alton there are families struggling to put food on the table. 8.6% of people in our area are believed to be in fuel poverty. These families will be forced to make a choice this winter between food or fuel. For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis - redundancy, benefit delay or an unexpected bill can mean going hungry.

Alton Foodbank has been set up by The Butts church with the help of The Trussell Trust. Several churches in the town have pledged their support and with their help we are planning to begin issuing food to needy families in November.

We have already received in excess of 500kg of tinned and dried food from Medstead school, Butts school, St Lawrence's school and Alton Infants school.

The Harvest church have provided a storage area at The Maltings Centre. Ceratech on Omega Park have generously donated shelving units and Sainsbury's have donated warehouse equipment.

Initially we will be distributing food to families from Alton CAB on a Saturday morning, but we hope there will be other distribution centres as we move forward with this project.
