Discover the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. It is crammed full of ingenious gadgets – most of them still working. The gardens are incredible. One of the largest rock gardens in Europe leads down to the Iron Bridge, which in turn leads to the formal garden. Children will love our adventure play area and exploring Nelly's Labyrinth, a network of paths and tunnels cut out of a vast area of rhododendron forest.

With more than 30 miles of beaches the Northumberland Coast is simply spectacular. Promenade along piers, play at penny arcades and tuck into fish and chips whilst enjoying the sea view at retro-chic seaside towns such as Seahouses. Visit Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, a seaside village making artistic waves with The Couples, Britain’s first permanent coastal sculpture. Discover picturesque fishing communities, clustered around sandy coves.
Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England. Many of these castles, including Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne, stand guard along our dramatic coast. We have a wealth of local knowledge so please ask if you are unsure or need some inspiration for walks. We can highly recommend a walk from Craster home of kippers to Dunstanburgh castle, ending with a cosy lunch in the Jolly fisherman pub, Craster.
Drive across the causeway to Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the birthplace of the magnificent Lindisfarne Gospels. At the Lindisfane Centre you can turn virtual pages of a facsimile version of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
Northumberland’s coast is a giant adventure park where you can enjoy adrenaline-pumping sports like coasteering, kite and wind surfing.
Why not visit one of Northumberland’s amazing coastal nature reserves like the Farne Islands, Coquet Island and Druridge Bay.
The historic market town of Alnwick just a 25 minute drive from Wooler, with its castle, home to the Duke & Duchess of Northumberland, celebrated gardens and the famous Bari Tea Shop. A visit to Howick Hall and Garden, the home of Earl Grey tea, is highly recommended for garden and tea lovers.
