General information

StreetDoctors started in 2008 when we asked eleven young offenders if they had ever seen someone get stabbed or shot. All eleven young people had seen a stabbing and three had seen a shooting. When someone has an injury from violent trauma it is vital that they receive treatment quickly. The more blood they lose the less chance the victim has of survival. We realised that by training these young people in what to do in a medial emergency lives could be saved. These young people are perfectly situated to deliver life saving treatment where it is needed most.

Violence is the third leading cause of death of young people in Europe. Some of these deaths happen needlessly, because the people present do not know what to do, they panic and do not call for appropriate help.

StreetDoctors is a group of over 400 volunteers who are all medical students or junior doctors. Volunteers deliver our sessions from 18 teams based in 14 cities across the UK. We teach young people at risk the immediate management of traumatic injuries in a way which is interactive, practical and simple to understand. Skills can be recalled and utilised readily in an emergency where action is required urgently. Teaching gives young people skills and confidence in pre-hospital care as well as facilitating a change in attitude towards violence. The project started in 2008 in Liverpool and was established as the Charity StreetDoctors in 2013.
