The practice is a friendly home based studio run by RIBA Chartered Architect Andrew Long in Exmouth, South West UK. The principal offers a full bespoke professional design service for projects ranging from £30k to £10m from concept to detail in every project that can be tailored to suite the clients individual needs. The client will gain the benefit of the principal as a fully qualified RIBA Chartered Architect on each and every detail and at every stage of the design process. This not only ensures design continuity from sketch scheme to construction drawings to overseeing the site workmanship, it ensures the design flows through the project from concept to completion and that a bespoke high quality product which meets the clients brief and budget is created which aspires to achieve excellence and best practice detailing which aims to be award winning.

Having Gained over 15 continual years architectural experience in UK private practices Andrew has a diversity of experience in Housing, Master planning, Retail, Residential, Commercial and Public buildings which has been fostered by some of the leading commercial practices in the UK. 8 years of this experience was in Bristol during the commercial boom of the 2,000s.

Andrew’s urban design and architectural education has been developed to Masters level at University of Bath, one of the UK’s leading schools of architecture. The Master of Architecture and Conservation of Historic Buildings were tutored by several leading UK architects including Richard Feilden, Bob Allies and David Shelev. Masters in their own right with London based Architectural Practices of their own. A deep contextual understanding of architecture and how light and space can be captured and enveloped by different construction materials was developed through the Erasmus Exchange study in Bordeaux, Barcelona and the 6th year project in Lisbon Portugal in particular. Andrew’s Masters Thesis was written in Italy and involved an in depth study into Carlos Scarpa in Venice, Verona, San Vito and Treviso. The study was a insight into the conversion of the most historic of Italy’s Renaissance palaces with finely detailed creative interventions. This insight into creating inspiring beautiful buildings in the context of the Mediterranean has given Andrew a rich and varied understanding of design to apply to bespoke contemporary, vernacular and commercial architecture in the UK and Europe.

Andrew’s house designs are completely bespoke from planning to working detail and personally crafted to a high level of architectural detail. Design is a destination after a journey of detailed research study and development of thorough site and regional analysis, of sun paths, views, local planning constraints and an in depth personal understanding of the clients living needs, brief and personality.

Andrew strongly believes it is necessary to gain a creative insight into what inspires and makes a client happy, their personal likes interests and tastes and how they have always wanted to live their lives. Even what their favourite art, poetry and music can be considered in the design of a sensual house that seeks to be an inspiring, beautiful, happy yet functional place to live. The clients full participation is therefore welcomed and expected throughout the design journey.

An understanding in design from concept to detail through research and development has cultivated an award winning portfolio of different commercial building types that include bespoke housing, Primary & Secondary Schools, Colleges of Further Education, Police Stations, Data Centres, High Street Banks, Mixed use developments of housing both market rate and affordable, retail and industrial. Many sites involved the creative re-use of Historic and listed Buildings of Grades 2, 2* and 1 class order.

A proven track record for commercial awareness in meeting tight deadlines with high quality creative designs and an obsession for best practice technical detail and accurately co-ordinated packages of information has ultimately lead to winning national and local competitions, tenders and novations. A well coordinated design and highly detailed package of drawings can make for a successful project in keeping the quality, cost and time.

A good positive attitude and enthusiasm underpinned by a driven commercial ability to meet budget and deadlines help to forge an RIBA Chartered Architect who has proven to be fundamental to the success of projects, happy clients and repeat work. An interest in working towards passivhaus standards, low carbon design, sustainable and ecological design in public and private sectors has cultivated an interest in the life cycle cost and analysis of the buildings future use. It is also important to consider the flexibility of future use and lifetime homes philosophy for the disabled and elderly.
