Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary Company Information
General information
In June 2000, an injured swan was taken to a vet and after treatment it needed 10 days of rest and further medication, but there was nowhere in the area to take him so it got put to sleep. This is when the decision was made to set up Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary.
In February 2001, the Warwickshire wildlife sanctuary opened its doors to wildlife casualties, and our very first casualty was a swan that had crash landed on the M6, thankfully only in shock and no permanent injury so was released successfully.
In 5 years we have had over 320 swans come in to our care. Some were young, some were just shocked but a lot of them had been purposely hurt by human beings, either shot wounds, fishing line/hooks, etc. This is something we have to face each and every week, not just with swans but a lot of wildlife.
September 2001 saw our first domestic rabbit. Rosie was a black and white Dutch rabbit, if we didn’t take Rosie in the owners threatened to release her to the wild, where she wouldn’t survive. This was the first of many domestic pet we have taken in.
In November 2006, the sanctuary became a registered charity under the name Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, registered charity number 1116741.
