Outrage at pension 'short-change'

By Alison Steed

12:01AM GMT 08 Nov 2003

David Robson, a former Fleet Air Arm Aircraft Artificer 1st Class, is one of 3,000 ex-servicemen involved in Armed Forces Pension Group litigation against the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury.

He has become so disenchanted with the way former servicemen are being treated by the MoD, he is setting up a Combined Armed Forces Federation.

Mr Robson said: "I consider I am entitled to an occupational pension of eight years for my service from age 18 to 26. The rotten thing about it is that, although we did not qualify for a pension at the time, they were abating our pay to make allowances for the pension rates.

"What leaves the nasty taste is that they were short-changing us for pension benefits and then saying at the same time if you serve for less than 22 years you are not going to get one. It is outrageous."

Mr Robson, whose great-uncle, Pipe Major Daniel Laidlaw of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Loos in France, said he feels "let down and deceived".

He said: "We get all this rhetoric from MPs saying what fine and wonderful fighting men we were, and this is the sort of thing they end up doing. The feeling you get is that now your service is no longer required, they don't care about you. We are all feeling extremely angry."
