General information

LuluLocal has been established by us to help local businesses. The idea came from Mike’s strong background in marketing but really from his own experience as a local shopper. After becoming a single dad and giving up his previous career running a technology company and establishing a marketing agency, Mike saw from his frequent local shopping trips that local shops and businesses could really improve their marketing. He feels that local businesses are vital to a real sense of community and, in a more basic way, are vital for supplying jobs that people can get to easily – especially for parents who have to collect kids from school.

He found there were a lot of great deals available locally, but only if you asked or had a bit of a haggle. In his own words: “The idea really came to me when I was doing one of my usual verbal deals with Raj in the local minimart. He would always offer me a deal on purchasing multiple items – say two bottles of wine instead of one and he’d offer 20% off. These deals weren’t advertised, but it meant I would shop there and so it was a good incentive to go back. I also told my friends about them but they always seemed a bit shy about going in and asking for a discount. Raj did have the odd hand-written bit of A4 in the window with specials, but that just doesn’t look professional or enticing. So, the simple thought was, why not use the same promotion and marketing techniques the big retailers use, but apply them to smaller businesses. Since that time there’s been a lot of talk about the death of local shops – it’s time they, and local consumers, fought back. So LuluLocal was born.”
