General information

We are an independent body dedicated to advancing orthopaedic knowledge, not just by funding and publicising research - but also by organising training and events which promote collaboration between orthopaedic surgeons, scientists and engineers.

We were established in 1989 by the orthopaedic surgeon Mr Ronald Furlong FRCS. Until 2011 we were known as the Furlong Research Charitable Foundation.

Today we are one of the most significant funders of orthopaedic research in the UK, working alongside many of the UK’s leading academic institutions.

We run many events. Some provide training in orthopaedic techniques. Others gather experts from different disciplines to share knowledge and best practice. We also actively publicise the findings of research we have funded.

Our scientific advisory committee meets three times a year to support our funding decisions. An independent review panel assesses each project separately from the foundation. Overseeing all our activities and decisions are our Trustees. These, like all our committees, comprise eminent figures from within the orthopaedic field.
