General information

SS gained their first commission on November 30th 2009 in St Andrews as part of the Homecoming Scotland Grand Finale. This was a free outdoor performance to an audience of almost 2,000 of all ages, promoted by the festival. As an on-going policy, it is intended that work is presented with free or subsidised admission, thus making the art more readily available to all.
Much of the work is accompanied by workshops for adults and young people that explore themes in the show that can also relate to everyday/life issues, incorporating art forms such as dance, music or circus. These can also be included as part of the experience to develop skills and understanding of the artistic process, while contributing to building self-esteem and social cohesion both within
the company and the local community.
Another strand that SS has developed includes that of taking music to elderly people into residential homes and sheltered housing as part of their recreational and well-being programme. A pilot was tried out in South London, 4 years ago, and subsequently SS applied successfully to The Big Lottery (Awards For All) for a six month project in East London called The Smiling Sessions, which started in January 2011 and was nominated for the Big Lottery Awards semi-finals. 3 years on, the project hs grown and delivers sessions regularly across East London.
Another success story is the violin group for adults, Strung Out, which now has 4 classes ranging from Absolute Beginners to intermediates. Our motto is "It's never too late".
