Stop Ivory

General information

Stop Ivory was introduced to the world at the London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade by 5 African Elephant Range States when it helped launch the Elephant Protection Initiative. Stop Ivory is now working with these range States - Botswana, Tanzania, Gabon, Ethiopia and Chad - to achieve the aims of the Elephant Protection Initiative, and put an end to the poaching crisis and the illegal trade in ivory. These aims are as follows:

1. Build on existing agreements to provide a simple, transparent and accountable framework for African Elephant Range States and other countries to take action to:

- transparently and accountably inventory and non- commercially dispose of ivory stockpiles and accrued ivory;

- suspend consideration of international trade until African elephant populations are no longer threatened; and

- strengthen and harmonise domestic laws to prevent domestic trade in ivory and enhance the protection of elephants.

2. Establish and endow a transparent, professionally managed 10-year fund to provide participating African Range States with emergency and long term funding to address the Ivory Crisis and to implement the African Elephant Action Plan.

Stop Ivory is now looking to:

- work in partnership with governments, other key NGOs and the private sector to build on the $4m already raised and make an immediate difference on the ground;

- develop the administrative and financial mechanism for the short and long-term implementation of the Elephant Protection Initiative;

- build relationships with further African Elephant range States to obtain wider commitment to the aims of the Elephant Protection Initiative.
