DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AU PAIR AND NANNY

An Au pair is often considered to be the same as a nanny, but there actually is an important distinction between the two. Here are the top 5 differences between an Au pair and a nanny:

1. Demographic profile
To qualify for Au pair programs an Au pair must be between the ages of 18 and 30. Nannies can be aged 18 and older. Au pair comes from different country her cultural, and socio-economic background may differ drastically to the country of her chosen destination. Nannies are usually residents of the same country in which they work and are aware of the culture, customs, and geographical layout of the area.

2. Material conditions
An au pair lives in host family’s home and has to have a separate bedroom. Host family is responsible for supplying her meals and providing a small pocket money. Nannies usually come by day (live out nanny). They aren’t entitled to meals or accommodation. Nanny will earn a living wage in accordance with employment regulations. Hosting an Au pair is substantially less expensive than employing a nanny.

3. Relationship
A professional nanny works for a family as an employee and have an employment contract. The term “au pair” means “equal”. The word highlights that Au pair should be regarded as a member of the family for a specific period of time and not as an employee. Au pair is often treated as a big sister to the children and an older responsible daughter to a host family.

4. Purpose
A nanny will probably consider her work to be her long term career whereas the primary goal of an Au pair is supposed to be continuing education and participating in cultural exchange.

5. Work experience and qualifications
A nanny is likely to have several years of childcare experience, some form of childcare qualification or practical training. An Au pair may have cared for their own siblings but otherwise will probably have little or no childcare experience or professional training.
