General information
Alpacas are beautiful gentle animals. They originate in South America, where they live in the high, barren Andes. They were bred by the Incas for their extremely soft and fine fibre and are related to llamas, which were bred as pack animals. Unlike sheep wool, alpaca fibre - when properly sorted - does not scratch and it is free of lanolin (which causes an allergic reaction in some people). Alpacas also act as flock guardians, chasing foxes away from lambs and chickens.
