Houghton and District Ramblers Company Information
General information
Houghton & District Ramblers formally Bursgreen Rambling Club.
The original club was formed on October 16th 1975 by employees of Bursgreen Engineering Company of Fence Houses, County Durham.
The membership grew over the years into a well supported & friendly club that was so successful the membership had to be limited.
In July 1993 Bursgreen Engineering Company closed but the rambling club continued. Over the following years the name of the company was slowly forgotten and people could no longer associate the name, Bursgreen, with the company or area. As a result, the membership slowly reduced. At the AGM on December 10th 2004, it was proposed that the name be changed to Houghton & District Ramblers. This was accepted and the membership is once again on the up.
Houghton & District Ramblers is a independent group. It is not necessary to be a member of the RA to be a member of H&DR but many members are.
You are welcome to walk with the group but we do ask that if you wish to walk with us on a regular basis that you join. Membership is £10.00 per year.
We walk every second week on alternative weeks to the Ramblers Sunderland Group and many of our members walk with both groups thereby walking every week.
Travel to the walk start is either by car or coach, see our walk program for further details.

The other being Bursgreen (Colne) Ltd. based in Lodge Holme Trawden, Nr Colne, Lancs. Later the firm became Sagar Bursgreen before being taken over by Wadkin in 1956
In July 1993 Bursgreen Engineering Company, now called Wadkin Bursgreen closed when all production was transferred to the Wadkin site at Leicester.
