Psychology is an experimental science that is concerned with the explanation of human and animal behaviour. It is a broad and rapidly-growing biological discipline, and Psychology at Newcastle reflects this breadth and rapid growth.
Our flagship Psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) providing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. Having Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership means you can join the BPS and go on to further training or practice in psychology. Our teaching received the maximum 24 out of 24 by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).
There are 3 joint honours degrees to choose from. These allow you to study two complementary subjects. By studying two subjects, you develop a broad range of expertise and a set of skills that span two specialist areas, preparing you for a wide range of careers. The joint honours degrees include Biology and Psychology, Maths and Psychology and Nutrition and Psychology. These degrees are not accredited by the BPS.
There is an extensive range of research in psychology, or in interdisciplinary areas involving psychology, taking place in academic units or groupings beyond the School, and involving research in other Faculties, in the NHS, and elsewhere in the city of Newcastle as detailed below:
The Institute of Neuroscience, the Institute of Health and Society, the Institute of Ageing and Health, Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences are all based within Newcastle University. There are also strengthening links with Northumbria University and we now have a combined seminar series, alongside a large cross-university group interested in developmental psychology.
