Mediated agreements are achieved much more quickly and cost effectively than trying to settle things through lawyers or the courts. Legal Aid is no longer available for most Family Law – but there is additional government funding for Legal Aid for Family Mediation, because it works. The Ministry of Justice wants to divert commercial, civil employment and other disputes to mediation, instead of having them resolved via the Courts.
