Monnow River Cottage Company Information
General information
The cottage is a converted bakehouse which was used to make bread for the village well into the 20th century. It sits next to The Mill House in a peaceful garden setting and overlooks the mill building. Inside, you’ll be welcomed with a basket of local produce including welshcakes and locally made luxury chocolates. The flagstone entrance hall has room for boots and coats. Off the hallway are the kitchen and bathroom which are built on the site of the original bread ovens. The kitchen, which overlooks a private patio, is equipped with a halogen ceramic hob, electric oven, Belfast sink, microwave and fridge/freezer. The bathroom has WC, wash-basin, shower and washing machine.
The large beamed living room overlooks the beautiful old-fashioned garden of lawns and herbaceous borders. Relax on a comfortable sofa in front of the log burning stove and a TV/DVD player. A selection of books and DVD’s and board games offer alternative entertainment if you decide to stay in. Off the sitting room and overlooking the kitchen garden and old orchard is a large, bright sunroom with more comfortable seating and another dining table. French doors from the sunroom lead onto a secluded sunny patio, perfect for breakfast or a coffee with papers bought from the award-winning local village shop, Hopes. Or an ideal place to simply relax, watching the energetic garden birds at their feeders.
Upstairs is a spacious oak beamed double aspect bedroom. There is an ensuite toilet with an airing cupboard. In the bedroom further cupboards allow plenty of storage as well as extra pillows and an iron and ironing board.
A Perfect Setting
Alongside the ancient 18ft mill wheel is a lovely private garden for you to enjoy. A sloping lawn leads to a paved area enclosed by a high stone wall and the waterwheel. It has a table, benches and a chiminea barbecue. The view is towards the river, fields and the Black Mountains in the distance. You can also enjoy our wild flower meadows for picnics by the river, spotting a kingfisher or fishing for wild brown trout - a fishing licence can be bought from Longtown Post Office. This is a perfect place to relax in the evening over a glass of wine. Alternatively, a minute’s walk up the road is the local pub, The Crown, which offers a selection of real ales and a menu of homemade pies. Perfect.
