General information
An independent company since it was founded in 1974, BAR Publishing (http://www.barpublishing.com/) remains true to the original mission to “create a worldwide databank in archaeology that will be valid in 100 years’ time.” We publish monographs, excavation reports and edited collections across all areas of archaeology, from all parts of the world, and in five languages.
“The reputation and standing of BAR Publishing in the academic archaeological community is extremely high because it performs the vital function of publishing essential, specialised material.” Susan Pearce, Emeritus Professor of Museum Studies, University of Leicester
Over the last 40+ years, we have had the pleasure of working with an international community of over 4,600 leading archaeologists on more than 3,400 titles in the BAR International Series (http://www.barpublishing.com/international-series/) and the BAR British Series (http://www.barpublishing.com/british-series/).
We offer our authors a highly professional yet personal editorial and production service, plus effective marketing and sales to universities, libraries and bookshops worldwide. Find out more at http://www.barpublishing.com/how-to-publish.html.

Where did it all start?
The BAR Publishing story goes back to 1967 when co-founders David Walker and Dr Anthony Hands recognised the need for a quality specialist publisher to bring excellent archaeological research to market quickly and efficiently.
They were determined to publish research from countries that were barely represented at the time, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and Spain under Franco’s regime. They were also committed to publishing manuscripts in five languages – English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
They bought a printing machine and guillotine and, from a home office with the help of family members and students, British Archaeological Reports was born and the first BAR titles were produced and distributed.
But, although things started small, Anthony and David’s vision for BAR Publishing was to “create a worldwide databank in archaeology that will be valid in 100 years’ time”.
