General information

Purchased in 1984, Shadwell Estate in Norfolk (originally a 6,000-acre country estate) is now the UK base for one of the best regarded bloodstock operations in the world.

SHADWELL STUD
The Nunnery Stud, Norfolk acts as a base for Shadwell’s British and European racing and breeding activities. It is from here that our stallions in the UK, France, Italy, South Africa, Australasia and South America are managed.

Since its construction in 1987, The Nunnery Stud has been home to some of the world’s greatest racehorses and most influential stallions. Today, it is home to MAWATHEEQ, NAYEF and SAKHEE all Group winners in their own right and all with their own unique selling points. The most famous current resident of The Nunnery Stud however is the now pensioned GREEN DESERT; a son of DANZIG born in 1983, he is widely recognised to be one of the most influential sires of modern times. He has produced no less than 19 individual Gr.1 winners and world class sires such as CAPE CROSS, OASIS DREAM and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (both leading sire of 2YOS in Europe in 2013 by earnings and individual winners respectively.

Further afield our outlying stallions represent Shadwell across Europe in markets that suit their respective appeals: MUHTATHIR and NAAQOOS, based at Haras du Mezeray, France; leading Italian sire MUJAHID, managed by Allevamento di Besnate in Italy as well as UK based sires HAAFHD (Beechwood Grange Stud), BAHRI and KUTUB.

In addition, we support British and European Thoroughbred racing and breeding through investment such as race sponsorship. In 2013 we were the major sponsor at Shadwell Fillies Mile Day (Newmarket) and Shadwell Prix de la Nonette Day (Deauville, France) as well as individual races around the UK throughout the year.

SHADWELL RACING
For nearly 30 years, horses have run in major races across Europe in the nominated colours of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Shadwell supports 17 trainers in the UK and Europe with over 350 horses in training. In addition we also have horses in training in Australia and South Africa which we manage from our UK base. We further support bloodstock industries across the world through buying in France, the UK, Ireland, the USA, Australia and South Africa.
