We all like to enjoy a certain quality of life. Running water, electricity, warmth... we take these things for granted as we go about our daily lives, many of us paying no mind to the sheer magnitude of national infrastructure required to make these things such a given. Indeed, often the first time we notice them is when something goes wrong - a power cut, the water being stopped, or roadworks slowing us down when we're in a hurry.

Just think about it for a moment. For clean running water, we need water treatment, wastewater treatment, a functional sewer network, pumping stations, outstations, control centres and a whole host of operatives, supervisors and managers working across everything from construction to maintenance. That's a lot of skilled people up and down the country, and that's just the water industry.
