James Barclay

James Barclay Home Furnishings is owned and run by proprietor Mr James Barclay who started his working life as an apprentice upholsterer with local Perthshire company Thomas Love & Sons.

After completing a 5 year apprenticeship, Mr Barclay left to train with the Allied Hotel Company in upholstery and also carpet refurbishing.

It was here where he gained valuable experience in refurbishing.

In 1968 he decided to start his own business, so working from his parents' home in North Methven Street, Perth he embarked on a lifetime ambition.

It was not long before business started to grow and after just one year he opened his first shop at 98 Canal Street, Perth.

In the days when rent was a £1.00 per week plus rates, business was quickly growing and within 3 years Mr Barclay found himself moving into new premises at 36 Leonard Street, Perth.

Business continued to grow and once again he found himself outgrowing his premises. When the opportunity arose to purchase 2 Glasgow Road, Perth, gaining 18000 sq ft of retail area, he quickly decided that this was the way forward. This then enabled him to build a shop containing all furnishings for the home.
