General information
We embrace the idea of creating innovative solutions for the voluntary sector and the local community and encourage charities to work closely in partnership with local authorities and the private sector to maximise the benefit to the local community. In addition to the grant aid we have given out we have funded major local projects including:
§ £770,000 towards the restoration of Greenham Common
§ £450,000 to buy a digital X-Ray machine for West Berkshire Community Hospital
§ £550,000 to the North Hampshire based Pelican Cancer Foundation
§ £150,000 to the Dolphin Centre in Pangbourne
§ £650,000 to refurbish the athletics track at Crookham Common
§ £570,000 to the Watermill Theatre, Bagnor
§ £2 million to build the Slater Centre – a community resource for local charities
The Trust has also diversified into buying property for charitable and community partnerships to develop projects. In 2010 we helped open:
§ Broadway House (Newbury) – a shared centre for local counselling and voluntary organisations. Link to Broadway House
§ Heffernan House (Newbury) – supported living accommodation for young people with learning disabilities (run by West Berkshire Mencap). Link to West Berkshire Mencap website
§ Cornerstone (Thatcham) – the first transitional accommodation for teenagers leaving foster care in the country. Link to Children 1st West Berkshire
§ Growing2gether (Cottismore) – a horticultural therapy project which offers training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged people and the chance for people with learning difficulties to learn new skills. A collaborative charitable partnership run by West Berkshire Mencap and Newbury Community Resource Centre. Link to Newbury Community Resource Centre
§ The Innovation Centre – a suite of offices in Basingstoke offering flexible options for start up companies with business and funding support. Link to Innovation Centre website
§ Headley Community Shop will shortly be opening
In addition, the Trust spends around £200,000 each year funding New Greenham Arts – a subsidiary of Newbury’s thriving local theatre The Corn Exchange
