Odissi Indian Classical Dance -
Honouring the ancient tradition of devotional temple dance, Odissi’s journey began over 2000 years ago in the temples of Orissa, East India. Danced originally by Maharis (women who devoted their lives to dancing for god), the dance was offered then, as it is now, to Lord Jagannath – the principal deity in Orissa, and a form of Krishna.
Indian culture recognises dance as one of the highest offerings that can be given to god. Uniting the mind, body and spirit, devotional dancing is a connection to the divine presence that is around us.
Odissi was nearly lost during India’s history of foreign occupation, but following independence the dance was revived and given the classical form we see today.
Maryam first discovered Odissi on her travels in India in 2009. Through seeing, experiencing and falling in love with this dance form and all it represents, she discovered surrender, devotion and her dream. And when you have a dream, what else is there to do but follow it?
She gives thanks to her first Guru, Sri Padma Charan Dehury, her present teacher, Swapnokalpa Dasgupta and other teachers who have lit her path including: Sujata Mohapatra, Sudhansu Puhan, Poushali Mukerjee.
Freeflower India Inspired Improvisation & Choreography –
An expression grounded in beauty, presence and above all, love.
In the Freeflower project, Maryam brings to life the style, grace and refinement that her classical training has brought her, in a more abstract form. We are taken on a journey, as we watch stories unfold and energy be transformed before our eyes with poise, elegance and a presence we can connect with.
Through the improvisation aspect, we are able to observe and experience moments of creation; moments of synchronicity; and moments of pure emotion and bliss, that reflect the divinity within us all.
It is Maryam’s love of free dance, and a desire to create a platform for her own personal expression through dance, that has led to the creation of Freeflower.
