General information
Western Herbal Medicine:
Western herbal medicine is the use of remedies made from plants to help people back to good health is the original natural medicine. People have been using herbs as remedies for many thousands of years. Modern herbal medicine combines traditional knowledge with the latest scientific research about plant medicines and health. An increasing body of research is validating time-honoured wisdom about plants and their effectiveness as medicines.
The herbalist's approach:
Herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic skills and physical examination techniques as orthodox doctors, but take a more holistic approach to illness. They aim to uncover the underlying causes of the problem, and it is these causes that are treated rather than the symptoms alone.
The most important difference is that treatment is tailored to the individual. Each prescription is customised to take into account the patient's unique constitution and health history. By treating the whole body real, lasting good health be achieved.
The consultations:
Your first consultation will last for at least one hour and you will be asked questions about the condition you are worried about, and also about the health of all of your body systems. A detailed history will be taken, building up a picture of how previous illness and your lifestyle may be affecting how you feel now.
Follow-up consultations are shorter. The number and frequency of these varies, but it is common to have a second consultation after four weeks, and a monthly pattern of visits is usual until a satisfactory outcome is achieved.
Many patients like to have repeat prescriptions once we have established a formula that suits them.
A typical prescription is a teaspoon of liquid tincture taken with water three times a day. Dried herbs, creams, and tablets can also be prescribed.
What if I'm taking prescribed drugs?
Herbal medicine, when individually and correctly prescribed by a qualified herbalist, is safe to take alongside prescription drugs. Herbalists are trained to formulate prescriptions that work alongside any orthodox treatment and also to recognize when it is not appropriate to mix the two. Please bring along any medicines you are taking.
