Burton Manor Gardens Company Information
General information
Burton Manor is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1805, when William Congreve built Burton Hall for his family. In 1903 ownership passed to the Gladstones who remodelled Burton Hall, creating Burton Manor. In 1948 the manor became an adult education college, running day and weekend residential courses. The college closed in March 2011 allowing prospective buyers the opportunity to propose new plans for Burton Manor.
The Friends of Burton Manor Gardens, a volunteer group, are dedicated to restoring and maintaining the gardens and the grounds around Burton Manor. We have an active garden project reliant on volunteers and grants for the conservation of the original Victorian and Edwardian gardens. With the help of Heritage Lottery funding, a large Edwardian glasshouse has been restored to it’s original design. This glasshouse is big enough to be used both as a greenhouse and as a daytime education facility. As well as the renovation of the glasshouse, other impressive restoration has been achieved, including conversion of the original outbuildings into art and craft workshops. The original gatehouse is now Burton Manor Cafe and in Burton Manor’s extensive grounds you can now visit a rare underground ice house.
