Birtley House Independent School

General information

We are a co-educational school for children with specialist needs, aged 5-11 years (Y1-Y6). Birtley House is a happy school with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have a family feel and every child matters to us. We value every child as an individual and cater for personal learning styles in our teaching methods and intervention groups. Our curriculum is a creative, varied, multi sensory, cross curricula programme which includes social skills, communication and language skills, motor skills, emotional intelligence and citizenship skills. We also deliver every other area of the National Curriculum and other out of school activities including swimming, horse riding, local visits and outdoor residential courses.

Classes are small and many lessons make use of our beautiful grounds and local forests. We encourage pupils to develop their strengths whilst working towards challenging but achievable targets in their areas of need through personalised learning plans.

ADMISSIONS
Before any child is admitted to the school, it is important that we meet you and your child to discuss their needs and suitability for the specialist curriculum. We are happy to conduct visits at you convenience. We also invite children to Birtley House for 4 days prior to formal entry, with a meeting at the end to discuss the placement.

CRITERIA
1. Children who lack confidence, may be anxious, find it difficult to concentrate or need extra support or nurturing.

2. Children with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or mild-moderate learning delay.

3. Children who are performing below government age expectations in numeracy and literacy.

4. Children with social communication/social anxiety/attachment disorders.

5. Children with Statements/EHCPs will be considered at the discretion of the Headteacher.
