General information

1959 – the story begins
Joe Skinner, a steam engine driver, yachtsman and magician, joins W R Green Haulage and sets up in partnership with William Green. After seven years, William withdraws from the business, leaving Joe to build the business and the Green & Skinner brand.

1960s – nationwide coverage
The Green & Skinner fleet comprises four flat bed lorries and we acquire an 'A' Licence, allowing us to cover the whole of the UK. All vehicles carry our distinctive logo, as they still do today.

1970s – forward thinking
Anticipating developments in the haulage industry, we take an active interest in the move to containerisation. Our fleet becomes more diverse as we meet the needs of our growing customer base.

The next generation of Skinners, Michael & Richard, join the firm to ensure that we remain a family run business.

1980s – a modern fleet
Along with major growth in business, our fleet changes dramatically, with new trucks ranging from 10,000kgs to 20,000kgs carrying capacity. The main method of distribution changes from rope and sheet to containers and curtainside vehicles. However, we retain our flatbed equipment for specialist haulage.

Our company livery is updated and our premises are transformed with a new workshop, office and undercover loading area.

In 1983 the company mourns the sudden and unexpected death of its founder Joe Skinner at the age of 62.

1990s – delivering quality and service
While containerisation and curtainside delivery become the norm, we retain a number of flatbed vehicles to offer the widest possible range of services to meet all our customers’ needs. We continue to upgrade our fleet to achieve increased reliability, as well as improved driver comfort, safety and efficiency.

In 1993, we are proud to achieve the prestigious BS 5750 (now BS EN ISO 9001:2008) quality assurance mark.

To enable us to meet ever tighter delivery deadlines, scheduled vehicle maintenance and repairs are still carried out in-house to the high standards demanded by the company.

2000s – investing in the latest technology
We complement our modern fleet by investing in the latest computer technology. The fleet is fitted with satellite tracking and we invest in advanced traffic management systems.

In 2009, we celebrate 50 years of providing quality nationwide haulage and distribution.

2016 - The future

In April 2016 Green & Skinner (Haulage) Limited was acquired by James Dolan Limited
