Prince Of Wales Company Information
General information
Built in 1852 by William Kelsall, a saddler of Old Glossop, the first mention of a beerhouse on the site was in the local newspaper the Glossop Record in June 1863. An advertisement stated that "Decima Hall is selling up at the Spinners Arms, Milltown, and leaving the country". Many new pubs were built around this time to accommodate the demand of the rapidly increasing population, a result of the burgeoning development of the cotton mills during the industrial revolution. The Howardtown Mill complex - originally immediately behind the pub - was one of the largest integrated cotton mills in the country by the end of the 19th century: so a lot of thirsty mill workers drank here!
After Decima emigrated in 1864, John Booth moved down from the Drovers Arms to take up the licence. In the 1871 census he was described as a grocer and and licensee of what was now called the Prince Of Wales, very likely renamed in honour of the marriage of the Prince to Princess Alexandra of Denmark the year before.
The pub was sold to Openshaw Brewery in 1903, which was like many independent breweries taken over by the Bass conglomerate in the 1960s. After a short period of private ownership in the 1980's, it was bought by Marston Thompson and Evershed in 1984, and has remained a Marston's pub to the present day.
