General information
The Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society was founded in 1970 in memory of Mabel Dolmetsch. Our name changed in 2015 to reflect more accurately what we do.
Historical dance, or early dance, embraces social dancing of the courts and ballrooms of Europe and choreographies from theatre and court entertainments. The periods covered range from the 15th to the 20th century.
We publish Historical Dance, a leading journal for research in the subject. Most articles from previous issues are available for downloading and book reviews appear on the web site prior to publication in the journal.
Books and CDs
We produce dance instruction booklets and accompanying recorded music, based on its own dance research.
Summer Schools
We run an annual Summer School, currently at Stoneyhurst College, Lancashire, UK.
Workshops
We run workshops on various periods of historical dance, as well as supporting local dance groups. Some of these workshops are for those new to historical dance and its associated music; others are for those who are more experienced. We also have a suite of workshops on the historical sources that underpin our understanding.
