Stevenage Furniture Recycling Scheme Company Information
General information
The aim of Stevenage Furniture Recycling Scheme is to enable residents of Stevenage who are most disadvantaged, on proven low income or in conditions of need, to achieve a decent, comfortable, socially acceptable home without incurring debt. We do this by ensuring that furniture and large electrical items, which are displayed for selection in the Scheme’s shop, are provided for a realistically affordable ‘handling charge’ which includes delivery into the home.
The condition and the quality of items accepted from donors is very good or frequently almost as new ensuring that they will last for a number of years. Therefore a home may be furnished with items of choice or items essential to the customers’ needs. This Scheme is about so much more than just furniture a fridge or cooker, it is about making it possible for everyone, no matter what their circumstances, to achieve a better home.
We encourage re-use by offering a free collection service for suitable items. This also reduces the total amount of perfectly good household items going into landfill. Our donors are aware of our valuable service and know that their donation is supporting those in need within their own community.
Our ‘open door’ policy means that most of our customers self-refer by bringing in the necessary proofs, proof of benefit/low income and proof of address, to register with the Scheme. An increasing number of customers are referred to the Scheme by partner agencies and support organizations, ensuring that those who are unable to provide such proofs at the time of being housed or who are in extreme conditions of need, can immediately access the service. Customers who are not on a provable low income can also buy furniture but pay a higher price.
This essential service is made possible through the dedicated work of volunteers and staff. Currently more than 20 volunteers from the local community give around 3,000 hours of their time each year which, in monetary terms, has an equivalent value of £25,000. Their time and skill ensures that the shop is open six days a week and that the van operates to schedule five days a week.
Our volunteers are supported and trained to work in accordance with the Scheme’s procedures. Sometimes volunteers just wish to give something back to the community whilst others are actively looking for work. They tell us that the Scheme is “welcoming” and “well organized” and that the opportunities we offer have a beneficial influence in the search for paid work. During a recent 16 month period 7 of our volunteers found jobs or returned to work.
On talking to our customers and from time to time carrying out written surveys we are ensured of the importance of and need for this Scheme. They appreciate and value the service provided and the cheerful and caring way in which it is delivered.
For 30 years Stevenage Furniture Recycling Scheme, its staff and volunteers have provided an equitable, inclusive and affordable service to the community of Stevenage. Long may it last!
