Rye Wurlitzer Academy

General information

Rye Wurlitzer Academy is the only project of its kind in the world. It exists to teach young people the dying art of playing the theatre organ.

All students receive free professional tuition, free music, and a free practice instrument for their homes. Rye Wurlitzer Academy relies solely upon donations to be able to achieve this.

Whilst our fundraising concerts and shows do give a small return, this is by no means enough to keep the academy afloat on a long-term basis.

In 2014 Rye Wurlitzer Academy had four entrants in the Young Theatre Organist of the Year competition and were proud to have two of our students win first and second places. Some of our students will also be entering into the 2015 competition, set to be held in November.

From time to time the Academy runs masterclasses, again at no cost to the students, to teach theatre organ style and registration, presentation, aspects of how to maintain and tune these historic instruments, along with a bit of history thrown in for good measure.

Rye Wurlitzer Academy is lucky to have use of Britain's second oldest Wurlitzer theatre organ which is located at Rye College in Rye, East Sussex.

These beautiful instruments once graced virtually every cinema in major towns across the world. The Rye Wurlitzer was originally designed to accompany all the silent films of the day, and was originally installed at the Palace Cinema in Tottenham.

It is hoped this unique opportunity for young people can be continued for many years to come, if funds allow.
