Scottish Karate Governing Body

The Scottish Karate Board of Control was inaugurated in 1973 with the help of the Scottish Council of Physical Recreation, now Sportscotland. In 1990 it changed its name to the Scottish Karate Board (Governing Body for Scotland) and in 2002 changed to the Scottish Karate Governing Body and is the only Governing Body for Karate recognised and grant aided by Sportscotland.

It has grown from just 5 associations to 32 today and represents over 12,000 participants.

The S.K.G.B. has a coaching licence system, which requires all coaches to have an Enhanced Scottish Criminal Records Office check carried out every two years before they can be issued with an S.K.G.B. Coaching Licence.

The S.K.G.B. also runs its own Refereeing programmes

The S.K.G.B. ratifies the awards of Black Belts (Dan Grades) within its membership and organises the training of its National Squads for international competition.

The S.K.G.B. also organises the Scottish National and Scottish International Open
championships which includes categories for children.

All S.K.G.B. licenced Coaches / Instructors are registered with the S.K.G.B. and have attended courses in Child Protection have knowledge of current safe practise, have attended First Aid courses and have had their Black Belts Ratified by the S.K.G.B.
