A BIT OF HISTORY: Canterbury House was built in the early 1800's, and has been a guest house since 1948. How things have changed since then. We have heard great stories from guests telling us when they visited with their parents in the 1950s and 60s, they queued for the one bathroom, and how breakfast was announced with a gong, and cereals and juices offered in a bowl/glass - no buffet or going back for more!
Well, the rooms are all now en-suite and the gong has definitely been put to bed. Our cereals, juices etc on the sideboard are there for all to enjoy.
ABOUT US:
July 2008 we moved into Canterbury House knowing its potential and improvements needed, but hadn't realised just how much work we'd face to bring it up to the standard we wanted. With a good clean and some small changes to soft furnishings and bed linen, we were on our way.....
2009, the ground floor en-suites were renewed and the bedrooms redecorated. The second year we worked on the first floor rooms; and so on. It was with great relief we were eventually able to say goodbye to the old patterned Axminster carpet that had been fitted in every room, staircase, landing and guest lounge.
We knew when we moved into Canterbury House, that the guest house had only just scraped through a Visit England grading from 3 star to low 4 star. Two years later we were 4 star Silver, and following that, Gold. Although the awards are great, the upgrades and changes we have made (and continue to make) are for our guests and their comfort.
ABOUT CANTERBURY HOUSE: Canterbury House sits in a lovely position close to the River Sid and the National Trust parkland 'The Byes'. An easy and level 5 minute stroll takes you into the town with its variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, and to the Jurassic Coast seafront where you can enjoy a walk along the esplanade taking in the views. There you'll find Jacob's Ladder, which takes you to the wonderful Connaught Gardens and Clockhouse Tea Rooms.
For those of you who enjoy live music, some of our pubs have bands or music events at weekends.
We are perfectly situated for exploring the nearby fishing villages, East Devon countryside, or further a field such as Dorset, Exeter, Dartmouth, Torquay and Cornwall.
We have comfortable en-suite bedrooms and two of which are on the ground floor. All rooms are well equipped and are designed for your comfort with DAB radios, hot complimentary drinks tray, hairdryer etc.
BREAKFAST: Our award winning breakfast menu is varied: we offer a selection of cereals, fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, juices, as well as Marc's tasty granola trifles. The cooked breakfast is traditional, e.g. Full English (or a combination of the ingredients), smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on muffins/toast, kippers etc., plus vegetarian/ vegan/gluten-free options,
Prices for 2018 vary depending on time of year and length of stay (see general information on this page for an example) Please see our website or contact us. We'd love to hear from you.

NB: FIRE SAFETY: We have checks from the Fire Regulations Office and have all their recommendations in place. We have smoke alarms in all rooms and a full fire procedure in place. We have an annual fire check by an approved company.
