Welcome to Foxburrow Farm, a traditional mixed farm, managed with the future firmly in mind.
With a mosaic of small fields in arable and livestock production, Foxburrow Farm shows how farmland can support wildlife and be commercially viable.
Crops of wheat, barley, beans and sugar beet are framed by grass margins and dense hedges, creating a web of wildlife runways across the farm.
The woodlands, ponds and meadows link into this valuable network of habitat, including the wildlife garden and the new wood, planted by local people
in 1997.
Throughout the year the farm buzzes to the sound of young voices as children from all over Suffolk visit to explore the farm and its wildlife. The education centre was established here in 1988 and in an agricultural county like Suffolk the opportunity for children to learn about farming and wildlife on a working farm is a valuable experience.
Foxburrow Farm is also home to the Trust’s flock of Hebridean sheep which come here for the winter and to lamb. Along with Exmoor ponies, the sheep graze our heathland nature reserves at Sutton and Hollesley Common and Tunstall and Blaxhall Commons to maintain the conditions needed by heathland specialists such as nightjar, woodlark, Dartford warbler, adder and silver-studded blue butterfly. They also graze other sites across the Sandlings, helping community groups and private landowners to maintain their heaths.
In Suffolk we are guardians of a significant proportion of the UK’s lowland heathland, but it is only a fraction of what there once was. Our aim is to reconnect these fragments of heath across a wildlife rich countryside to create the largest unbroken tract of heathland in Suffolk.
