General information

For visiting yachtsmen, sail the oldest working shipping canal in Europe, first opened to shipping in 1566 and the first canal to be built in Britain since Roman times. Enter the historic canal through Turf Lock and journey peacefully through 8 km of manmade waterway, enjoying stunning views and a variety of wildlife. Contact The Waterways Team for details of lock-in and out times, moorings, etc. https://exeter.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/sport-and-leisure/waterways/contact-the-waterways-office/

The Exe Estuary is of international importance for wintering waders and wildfowl, supporting 1000s of birds. One of the best opportunities to view the wildlife of the estuary is at the RSPB's two nature reserves. http://www.wfvw.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/seenature/reserves/guide/e/exminsterpowderham/index.aspx

Coarse fishing is available on the Exeter Canal between the Basin and Double Locks, and we have twelve salmon fishing beats on the River Exe. See our website for details about licences, etc. https://exeter.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/sport-and-leisure/waterways/river-and-canal-fishing/
