The George Inn

General information

Set in the peaceful village of Norton St Phillip, surrounded by the rolling Somerset hills, The George Inn is a Grade 1 listed building standing tall around 700 years after it was constructed. First built as a wool store for Hinton Priory and to accommodate travellers and merchants coming to the annual wool fayres, The George first acquired it's license to sell alcohol in 1397 making this the longest continuously licensed pub in Britain.

During the 1600's, the Inn became part of the Stagecoach route between London and the South West of England. It was then that noted diarist Samuel Pepys stayed with his wife and servants en route to Bath from Salisbury.

In 1685 The George served as headquarters to Monmouth's army as they retreated from Bath during the Monmouth Rebellion. It was then that Judge Jefferies condemned and conducted 12 executions on the village common as part of the Bloody Assizes.

Fast forward to 1998 and the Wadworth Brewery funded an extensive restoration, which uncovered various archaeological findings, some of which are still displayed today.

2014, and after another refurbishment including new guest bathrooms, freshly upholstered soft furnishings, a new bar in the 'Dungeon' and new furniture in the restaurant we are open for business with a new outlook to provide the very best in food, renowned Wadworth Ale and most importantly staff who are eager to make your visit worth every penny spent.
