Observatory Company Information
General information
We operate telescopes, for researchers, students, and everybody interested in astronomy.
There are currently four telescopes housed in the domes at the observatory, including the 38" diameter James Gregory Telescope (JGT), which is the largest optical telescope in use in the United Kingdom. The other permanently installed telescopes have primary mirror diameters of 20", 16" and 10". Various smaller portable telescopes are available as well.
The smaller telescopes are primarily used for teaching undergraduate students and also by the student astronomical society (astrosoc). The JGT was installed in 1962 and is used for a range of research programs. For example, it is often busy hunting exoplanets.
The observatory is fully open to the public on two nights every year, usually around March and November (near St Andrews Day). Tours of the JGT are offered every first Wednesday of the month, at 7pm.
