One Wish (North East Hospices Lottery)

General information

In 1998 four North East Hospices got together to launch a special hospice lottery that would help them to raise money in their areas. The four partners are St Teresa’s in Darlington, St Cuthbert’s in Durham, St Benedict’s in Sunderland and the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland. Together they launched One Wish, and a separate management company North East Hospices Lottery (NEHL) to run it.

NEHL is registered as company number 3540674 and with the Gambling Commission, who receive weekly returns on our activity. We are also independently audited each year. The first draw was on the 4 September, 1998, and since then it has raised over £4 million , and every penny of profit is ploughed back into the hospices.

Hospice care is different. Many people think that patients are only admitted to a hospice to be cared for at the end of their lives. This is not true. Patients are also admitted to a hospice for pain and symptom control and respite care. Plus, valuable support services are offered to patients’ loved ones; the kind of specialist, compassionate support the NHS simply doesn’t have the resources to provide.

Hospice care is a partnership. Specialist and experienced staff are dedicated to provide the services, but it is the ongoing support of local communities that makes it possible.
