The Code is the foundation of good nursing and midwifery practice, and a key tool in protecting the health and wellbeing of the public. It describes in broad terms the standards expected of nurses and midwives in the UK. It is also central to their education and the measure by which they are considered to be fit to practise.
The Code applies to all nurses and midwives regardless of their scope of practice or employment situation.
It is supported by more detailed standards and guidance which can be found at http://www.nmc.org.uk/standards.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) publishes the Code. The NMC is the professional regulator of nurses and midwives in the UK. The Code sits at the heart of the NMC’s work.
