Outside In

General information

Founded in 2006 by Pallant House Gallery, Outside In aims to provide opportunities for artists with a desire to create who see themselves as facing a barrier to the art world for reasons including health, disability or social circumstance. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgements about whose work can and should be displayed.

Since its inception, Outside In has engaged more than 5,000 artists traditionally excluded from the mainstream art world, 170,000 audience members and 80 partner organisations nationally. We have held over 30 exhibitions and currently support 2,000 artists. In 2014, we won the prestigious Charity Award in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category.

Additionally, Outside In is now able to offer an increasingly international platform for the artists it supports, having taken part in the 2014 Paris Outsider Art Fair, and being on the board of the European Outsider Art Association.

The project also runs Outside In: Step Up; a programme providing training for artists who align themselves with the project. Artists on the programme have the opportunity to be trained to lead workshops and to carry out research.
