General information

St Francis of Assisi Academies Trust (SFAAT) – On the 1st April 2013 the Federation of Bedford Catholic Schools (FBCS) became the St Francis of Assisi Academies Trust (SFAAT). This was formed by the Duns Scotus Trust which represents the Catholic Diocese of Northampton. School leaders were thus given greater freedom and autonomy to secure enhanced support services and deliver continuous improvements in provision.

St John Rigby Catholic Primary School (SJR), St Joseph’s Catholic Lower School (SJs), St Gregory’s Catholic Middle School (SGs) and St Thomas More Catholic Teaching School (STM) comprise the SFAAT. Together, we provide outstanding Catholic education for almost 2 000 young people across Bedford, from Early Years to Key Stage 5. Each school has a Head Teacher. The Head Teachers are supported by an Executive Principal (EP).

Our “all-through” learning structure puts the child at the heart of the system and builds, year on year, on gains in learning. Our focus is on personalisation and progress underpinned by our ethos of Catholic life. All staff are committed to working in partnership with parents to ensure that each individual pupil receives the best possible education whilst being encouraged to develop their God-given talents for the benefit of the learning community. Within this community staff share, support and challenge across year group, key stage and school.

St John Rigby Catholic Primary School (SJR) - On the 1st September 2012, St John Rigby Catholic Lower School welcomed its first Y5 pupils into the £1.2m new block. On the 1st September 2013, Y5 moved into Y6 and were joined by the new Y5; the Primary school had arrived.

SJR is a caring school, with a strong Catholic ethos and emphasis on excellence. The school has enjoyed an Ofsted ‘outstanding’ category since 2007 and KS1 results are ‘significantly above’ national data. Our aim is to nurture a love of learning, enable everyone to discover their talents and become the best they can be.

There are currently 413 pupils on roll. SJR is significantly over-subscribed, with waiting lists in operation in most year groups. Behaviour for learning is exceptional, staff are expert and Directors are well-informed and supportive. Parents have a pride in their school and are keen to be involved in school life. School events are very well attended.
